Geneva auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's concluded another two successful sales this fall despite the weak market conditions and in the wake of the luxury watch industry reporting to cut down 2500 jobs.
Sotheby's sale realizes 136.4m usd while Christie's sold 115.1m usd.
Color diamonds dominated the top lot categories with the "Sky Blue" diamond, a 8ct vivid blue selling for a total of 17.1m, or 2.1m per carat.
Another two noteworthy intense pink diamonds were sold at Sotheby's. A 17ct intense pink emerald cut sold for 20.8m or 1.21m per carat and a 13ct pear-shaped also intense pink IF sold for 16.2m usd (or 1.22m pc).
At christie’s, a 9.14ct vivid pink diamonds with a vs2 clarity was sold 18.25m dollars, almost 2m per carat.
Sotheby's broke record price for a deep blue diamond. No less than 9 bidders competed for the stone driving the price to a record high of 13.7m (or 1.7m pc). This was actually my favorite diamond as it had a really sweet and mesmerizing blue color. I will put my review of the stone at the end of the video.
Christie's also break a record for the most expensive set of diamond earrings sold at auction.
A pair of 52.55 and 50.47 Pear-shaped D-Flawless diamonds, over 103ct total weight, were sold for 17.4m usd (or 170,000pc).
The pair of diamonds were offered at no reserve. But despite the record price this shows a decrease in the price of colorless diamonds.
In comparison, on Ocotber 16, 2012 New York Christie's sold a similar 50.52ct pear-shape diamond also D-Flawless for 9.5m usd (or 188K per carat), a decrease of more than 10%, and that is without even calculating the settings - which probably cost another hundred of thousands (see link related to this diamond by clicking here).
It seems to me that on the one hand a 9ct vivid pink, only vs2 clarity, sells for 18.2m while a pair of 50ct each d-flawless perfect pear-shaped diamonds, over 100ct total weight sells for less indicates that a correction should be made soon, either decreasing the price of colored diamond or increasing the price of white fancy cut diamonds.
Either way, whoever bought this magnificent, flawless pair of pear-shaped diamonds made the deal of a lifetime.
Sotheby's sold 87% of the lots. Noteworthy unsold items were one not top but still very nice emerald cut 9ct Kashmir sapphire, while other top-grade gem quality Kashmir were sold for unusually high prices;
A sign that the market is strong for only top class goods.
