The world's most expensive gemstone was sold on Tuesday, April 4th, 2017 at Sotheby's Auction Spring Sell.
The Pink Star, a 59.6ct Fancy Vivid Pink, Internally Flawless, Type IIa diamond fetched $553,000 HKD (Hammer Price including Buyer's Premium) or $71.2m USD, making it the most valuable diamond ever sold in auction and the highest price fetched for any work ever sold in auction in Asia.
Hong Kong based conglamorate giant Chow Tai Fook was reported to purchase the diamond.
The diamond was described by GIA has one of the greatest natural treasures in the world.
This was the second time the Pink Star was offered in auction. In November 2013, a New York Based diamodn dealer purchased the diamond for $83m USD, but defaulted on his payment when his group of investors backed out.
Just for comparison, in May 2016, a 9ct vivid pink diamond was sold at christies auction in Geneva for $18.2m USD, roughly 2m per carat. The Pink Star, a 59.6ct sold for $71.2 usd, or $1.19 usd per carat.
